Feeding and eating problems are common autistic individuals. Difficulties such as only eating a very few foods, going a long time without eating and extreme anxiety about foods and mealtimes are frequently reported. These problems are not always understood and as a result, parents/carers and the individuals themselves often report feelings of stress, helplessness and blame. Conclusions: Based on the 63 articles extracted for this systematic review, nutritional deficiency diseases related to inadequate intakes of vitamin A, thiamin, vitamin B-12, vitamin C, and vitamin D were found in individuals with autism and the broad autism phenotype who had severe self-imposed dietary restrictions. ARFID is a pattern of eating that is common in individuals with autism and is combined with sensory sensitivity. Researchers have found links between autism and eating disorders, especially in thinking profiles. Both disorder patterns overlap with eating and restriction of food intake and potential for significant weight loss.
